While I was washing my car today, I decided it was time to apply my recently acquired Oppo sticker! Next weekend is scheduled for finally cutting and welding my rear quarter panel. That's going to be a fun adventure and I'm sure to learn something in the process.

I’m jealous you get to cut and weld on your own! I’ve always wanted to learn. I paid a shop to cut and weld the rear quarters when I put my flares on. It was far cheaper than buying a decent welder.

I made this a while back. Not sure if that’s what you’re attempting but it might help!

I’ve definitely seen em around Oppo but where did you get yours exactly and how much?

I want one.

Contact karl.ev (@gmail) and he can hook you up with whatever vinyl you are looking for at a good price. That is oppo user fourvalleys.

Well I am not doing it on my own. Or doing it at all really. I am going to attempt to “help” but my friend is basically going to do all of the hard parts. I will mostly just be there to observe. I hope to learn something from the process.

Yup, I will be removing as much of my rocker as possible while I am at it as well. Both of my rockers have some rot but thankfully they arent as bad as that!

The key is learning something. I had nobody to teach/show me.

So you’re putting on flares or are you doing repairs?

Repairs. My passenger side rear quarter panel is all sorts of destroyed from being run into a wall last year. I have repaired everything else on the car but the rear quarter is still currently dented beyond repair. Plus the rockers are pretty rusty so I will use this as an opportunity to repair at least that one.

Ouch. Good luck! I’ve got some seriously rusty rocker panels on both sides, I have yet to decide what I’m going to do about it.

Its worth just attacking them with a grinder and grinding the rust off. Then just throw some primer on it and call it a day. Sure you will then have a bit of a hole there but that is better than rust! My rockers arent really rusty anymore but they are a patch job of bondo and spray paint. The rust hasnt come back so it’s mildly successful. I just have to learn body work and then I could make it halfway decent.

I was thinking about that. On the forums I managed to snag these little winglet-shaped aero pieces that just about cover up the hole that will be there after I take an angle grinder to the thing. If I ended up buying a whole replacement rocker panel, I’d only need less than 1/3 of it so I didn’t really want to go that route. I’ll probably just chop it out, POR-15 the area, and hope I can cover it up nice.

Assuming you get all of the rust out, that should work out nicely. Hate the people on the forums that just equate ANY amount of rust to a worthless car that should be given up on. I feel like most of those guys have never lived in the Northeast/Midwest. Its impossible to have a car with absolutely no rust around here unless you just dont drive it. But it is certainly possible to take care of the issues in a manageable way.
